An indicative annual running-cost comparison using the MCS 031 efficiency basis: the heat pump SPF for space heating and the fixed factor for hot water, against the customer's existing system at today's prices.
Take these from the property's EPC (estimated annual energy for heating & hot water) or your heat loss / design figures.
SPF from the MCS 031 heat emitter guide for the property's heat loss (W/m²) and design flow temperature — e.g. around 3.1 at 50°C flow. The hot water factor is fixed at 1.7 in MCS 031. For the electricity rate, a dedicated heat pump tariff changes the comparison significantly.
Efficiency: a modern condensing gas boiler is around 0.90, oil ~0.85, direct electric 1.0. For oil/LPG, enter the effective cost per kWh (litre price ÷ kWh per litre). Use the customer's current unit rate.
Indicative only. This is a running-cost comparison to support the customer conversation, not the regulated MCS 031 pre-sale performance estimate, which must be produced through the proper EPC-data method and presentation. Energy prices change frequently — always enter current rates. SPF must come from the MCS 031 heat emitter guide for the specific property.
